Coaching sessions are available virtually and in person, either at my office in Coolidge Corner, Brookline or in Kendall Square, Cambridge

Frequently asked questions about coaching

What is coaching?

Coaching is a client-driven partnership that aims to bring your goals into focus and unlock your momentum. It is a process of facilitating your own learning and growth, rather than directing or advising.

What are the benefits of coaching?

Clients often report benefits such as increased self-awareness, improved goal setting and attainment, enhanced decision-making skills, greater personal effectiveness, and a better work-life balance. The specific benefits will vary depending on your goals and engagement.

What is the difference between coaching and therapy, consulting, or mentoring?

These interactions seem similar because listening is a big component in each. But there are important differences.

Coaching focuses on the present and future, supporting clients in achieving their self-identified goals. You are the expert on yourself and can find the most appropriate solutions; the coach is a facilitator.

Therapy often addresses past issues and emotional healing. The therapist is the expert.

Consulting also identifies goals and action steps, but an expert provides the advice and solutions.

Mentoring usually involves guidance from someone with experience in a particular field.

What can I expect in a coaching session?

Coaching is confidential. I will not disclose that you are a client, nor anything that is discussed in a coaching session, except for very specific circumstances.

A standard coaching session starts follows a 5-step framework:

  1. Set your goal for the session
  2. Imagine what it will be like when you achieve it
  3. Make realistic and measurable plans to get there
  4. Anticipate roadblocks
  5. Recap: Go back over future vision, the plan, and discuss terms for personal accountability

Identifying your true goal is more important than making a decision before we meet. In fact, often the first goal is to identify what those goals will be to facilitate progress. When it’s appropriate, I also employ frameworks and tools that are common to coaching and tools like the the VIA character assessment.

What are your credentials?

I’m a Lumia Certified Life Coach. Lumia is an ICF accredited training program, and I adhere to the ICF code of ethics.

I am also Mental Health First Aid Certified and maintain a clear boundary between coaching and mental health services.

How do I reach you?

Recommendations

“I just finished a set of coaching sessions with Katrina that I found extremely helpful.  Like many of us, I’ve been dealing with change and uncertainty in my career and life.  She did a great job listening and understanding as I gave her context on my priorities and coached me to clarify my strengths and how to better leverage them in my efforts to find my next professional role.  More importantly I deepened my self understanding as a result of the work we did together.” – Director of Software Engineering

Cost and time commitment

Coaching is an investment in yourself and your goals. New client engagements begin with the “Kickstart” package, after which you have the option to continue with flexible session bundles. Please review these options and consider not just the financial investment, but the weekly time you will dedicate to the coaching process. We can discuss the best fit for you during our introductory call.
